L & N S T E M ACADEMY VISIT

Two of our North Middle students recently had an opportunity to spend the day at the Knoxville, L&N STEM Academy. They wanted to share their experiences with their peers.
Seth Gates: “ When I went to L&N STEM Academy, the first thing we did was get issued an Ipad for the day. After that, we did team building activities to get to know each other. Next we went to tour the Academy. It was amazing. The campus was spread out within downtown Knoxville. The main building is inside the old L&N Train Station. While we were there, they had teachers and students talk to us about what the school was like. After speaking with the STEM students and touring the facility, I really wanted to attend there myself.
Maria Urias: “ We started the day with an activity using Legos. We were encouraged to use analyzing thought processes and understand how those processes effect engineering and design. We then toured the L&N building, an old train station, where we saw some of the latest technologies that the STEM students are exploring. All the students are issued an Ipad that they keep for four years, including the summer. We met with students to discuss challenges of STEM, and viewed the STEM rooms. The STEM classes are mandatory each year. There are four different STEM classes that the students progress through. In these classes, student must learn to solve difficult issues using the engineering and design process.

The STEM afterschool program at North Middle had some very special visitors recently. Dr. Edgar Lara-Curzio and Dr. Hsin Wang, from the Materials Science & Technology Division of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, came in and presented a lesson on energy & matter. Dr. Lara-Curzio brought in some very simple materials, like ice cubes and different metal discs that demonstrated how heat transfers very quickly through conductors and does not transfer through insulators. Dr. Wang demonstrated how an infrared camera can display temperatures from across the room. The students were able to see how conductors and insulators can distribute and hold heat. Thermoelectric devices were brought in to show the students how heat can directly be converted into electricity. This same technology is currently being used with General Motors to recover waste heat from automobile exhaust pipes. The new technology was very exciting!
The students were enthralled with the information and learned more in a short hour than they would have learned during several weeks in a classroom. The North Middle STEM program is very appreciative of Dr. Lara-Curzio and Dr. Wang sharing their knowledge and experiences with the cutting edge technology being developed here in East Tennessee. We hope to have them visit us more often to share more of their expertise about today’s technology.

NORTH MIDDLE IS MOVING ON UP
Each year, Education Consumers Foundation takes the value-added performance data provided by the state of Tennessee and presents it in the form of charts for elementary and middle schools in the state. This format allows parents and others to easily compare the performance of schools in their district or region. Overall, Loudon County Schools rank high on these measures.
